Quarry Farm
Quarry Farm, Moor Lane
Like Moor End Farm, Quarry Farm was part of the Harpur Crewe estate. During the late 19th century, it was let to the Johnson family. George Johnson was head of the family with his wife Elizabeth. They had five children: Mary (born 1880), William (born 1884), Leonard (born 1886), Edgar (born 1888) and Annie Amelia (born 1892).
Leonard and his wife Rosamund took over the farm. The 10th baronet, Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe died at Calke Abbey in 1924 (pre-deceased by his only son, Richard) and much of the estate was sold.
The Johnsons bought Quarry Farm in 1925. They had one son, Fred, who took over after them. He was a Special Constable during the war as well as a farmer. He lived and farmed Quarry Farm with his wife, Dorothy, and their son David. The family ran a herd of Jersey cattle on the land and sold the milk locally in cartons. At one time, Moor Lane was known locally as Johnson’s Lane.
David continued to farm there until the late 1980s when he moved to another farm in Hulland Ward. He sold Quarry Farm to George Millington. Some of the land was sold. The yard and farm buildings are used to make and sell Gemstone concrete products.
